The Swedish Association of International Affairs
SAIA - Sweden’s foremost forum for debate in international politics
The Swedish Association of International Affairs (SAIA) is a union for the collaboration between Sweden’s societies of international affairs. SAIA is an organization without political and religious ties with the view of promoting the dissemination of knowledge and stimulate debate on foreign policy, international and global issues from a diversity of opinions and perspectives. SAIA is established on a democratic basis and in the conviction of equality of all human beings.
Presently, SAIA consists of eight member associations, all represented in the union’s board and at its annual meeting. Its board gathers in the home towns of its member societies’ at least five times per year. As a step towards membership, newly established foreign policy societies are granted provisional membership in the union.
The primary activities of SAIA are made up of the programs and projects of the member societies. Altogether, over 250 lectures in foreign policy are annually held within the union. Lecturers from various aspects of society are invited to speak and debate a broad range of topics before an interested audience. In addition, there are a great number of study circles, debate contests, trips and other events arranged. The Swedish societies for international affairs also produce a growing number of periodicals, radio- and TV-broadcasts dealing with international politics. On the union level, SAIA annually arranges Utrikespolitiskt konvent, a convention for international matters, where all interested parties are welcome to attend lectures, debates and discussions, where organizations are invited to present themselves in a fair. Internally, SAIA regularly organizes forums, where members from all over the country share experiences and take part in workshops and information gathering sessions. SAIA’s Swedish name is Utrikespolitiska förbundet Sverige (UFS).
