Rapport från ett nationalekonomiskt verkstadsgolv -Assar Lindbeck

I anslutning till sina nyligen publicerade memoarer, "Ekonomi är att välja", diskuterar Assar Lindbeck nationalekonomins styrkor och svagheter.

Om boken: Med mina memoarer syftar jag främst till att förmedla vad jag har lärt under de sex decennier som jag arbetat med samhällsekonomiska frågor - en rapport från en bildningsresa för att använda en pretentiös formulering.

Assar Lindbeck har som få andra svenska forskare gjort avtryck i den ekonomisk-politiska debatten. I sin självbiografi berättar han om uppväxten i Norrbotten under trettiotalet och hur faderns fackliga engagemang väckte hans livslånga intresse för sociala frågor. Så påbörjades en enastående internationell karriär inom nationalekonomisk forskning där Assar Lindbeck kom att bli involverad i många viktiga frågor i svensk ekonomi och politik under andra hälften av 1900-talet. Han deltog bland annat i den kontroversiella löntagarfondsdebatten under sjuttiotalet och var ordförande i den s.k. Lindbeckkommissionen under nittiotalet. I mer än två decennier var han aktiv i kommittén för Sveriges Riksbanks pris i ekonomi till Alfred Nobels minne, allmänt kallat Nobelpriset i ekonomi.

Assar Lindbeck, född 1930, är verksam som professor vid Institutet för internationell ekonomi vid Stockholms universitet och som senior research fellow vid Institutet för näringslivsforskning. Han arbetar också som konstnär och är medlem av Kungliga vetenskapsakademien och Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien. Vartannat år delar Nationalekonomiska Föreningen ut en medalj ut i hans namn till en yngre lovande ekonom.

Framtidens Bistånd - Utrikespolitiska Institutet

Utrikespolitiska föreningen i samarbete med Utrikespolitiska institutet presenterar ett seminarium om framtidens bistånd och utvecklingens utmaningar.

Hur bygger man upp en stat efter en konflikt? Hur ser kopplingen mellan säkerhet och utveckling ut? Påverkar förändringarna i världsekonomin relationen mellan biståndsländer och givare? Nya förutsättningar kommer att definiera de fattiga ländernas utveckling de närmaste åren och ställa biståndet inför nya utmaningar. Många av de tidigare allra fattigaste län

derna blir allt rikare, men har fortfarande stora utsatta befolkningar. Flera av de största biståndsmottagarna är samtidigt länder tyngda av konflikter. Det är inte heller bara förutsättningarna i utvecklingsländerna som förändras, utan även givarsamfundet. Idag spelar Kina, Brasilien, näringsliv och filantroper en allt viktigare roll. Samtidigt pågår en livlig debatt om hur biståndet ska utformas i framtiden.

Utrikespolitiska institutet och Utrikespolitiska föreningen i Lund välkomnar dig till ett seminarium med experter som diskuterar några av de mest omdebatterade utmaningarna som framtidens bistånd kommer att ställas inför.

UPF GOES KINO - 5 Broken Cameras

UPF GOES KINO will be hosting our first event of this term on November 1st. Together with the Cinema KINO we will have a viewing of the movie "5 Broken Cameras" - A documentary on a Palestinian farmer's chronicle of his nonviolent resistance to the actions of the Israeli army.  Emad lives in Bil'in, just west of the city of Ramallah in the West Bank. Using the first camera, he recorded how the bulldozers came to rip the olive trees out of the ground in 20 05. Here, a wall was built directly through his fellow villagers' land to separate the advancing Jewish settlements from the Palestinians. In the first days of resistance to the Jewish colonists and the ever-present Israeli soldiers, Emad's son Gibreel was born. Scenes shift from the infant growing into a precocious preschooler to the many peaceful acts of protest, and the steady progress of the construction of the dividing wall. Sympathizers from all over the world, including from Israel, provide help as resistance develops, but when the situation intensifies, people are arrested and villagers are killed. Emad keeps on filming despite pleas from his wife, who fears reprisals. It makes for an intensely powerful personal document about one village's struggle against violence and oppression. Feminism in India in Historical Perspective - Dr. Mary E John

The Association of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with Svalorna Indien Bangladesh has the honour to present Dr. Mary E John, director of The Centre for Women's Development Studies in India. This presentation will look at the trajectories of feminism in historical perspective in India. It will do so by locating three broad frames within which feminism emerged and developed. The first, namely the colonial episteme, associated with the late nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth century, ex amines the way in which ‘feminism’ came to be selectively identified as Western, in the context of debates on culture and modernity, which has cast a shadow right up to the present.  The second moment, which may be identified as the ‘national’ episteme, corresponds to the post-independence period, especially the critical decades of the 1970s and 80s, also the time of the birth of a new women’s movement and women’s studies within the social sciences and humanities. Here prior debates about the westernness of feminism are reworked, and the compulsions of development produce new problems and questions for thinking about gender. Finally, I will consider what I call the post-national framework of the present, during which the women’s issues have been interrogated from within the nation, and, secondly, when globalization is the new horizon of reference. What then are the new challenges for feminism in the present? The lecture will be held in English. It is free for members and costs 30 SEK for non-members. Pickwick: U.S election

The U.S election is approaching fast with the third and last presidential debate taking place tonight. Therefore it might not come as a surprise that this week’s Pickwick meeting will be about the election. In what ways do you think that Romney’s vs. Obama’s political stands in different issues will affect the U.S citizens and the country’s international relations?
